A tale of progress and achievement…

The game we play was invented in Scotland in the second half of the nineteenth century and brought to Melbourne by Scottish immigrants in the 1860s. The Middle Park Bowling Club was founded in 1903, when Melbourne had 33 bowling clubs, including seven in the surrounding suburbs. The Club was primarily for influential people in the community at the time – members were mostly older men, and membership fees were prohibitively expensive. Until the Second World War, it maintained this status, with membership ranging from 150 to 200.

Women were “associate members” in many bowling clubs at the time, but the Ladies at Middle Park had their own club and played bowls from the beginning. This was unusual. Between 1913 and 1925, our Ladies had a lot of success, winning the Flag in the top Ladies pennant competition seven times. For much of this time, they were the dominant force in women’s bowling. The men did well as well, winning the White Flag (for winning the top pennant level) in 1923, which remains the Club’s only victory. Individual members received numerous awards as well. However, the club was hard hit by the Great Depression in the 1930s. The club had a poor record in terms of both the number of bowlers and the results they achieved from 1930 until after WWII.
